In Situ Burning as a
Pollution Response Tactic
in the Great Lakes

The United States Coast Guard is responsible for the planning and preparedness to respond to oil spills and hazardous substance incidents in the marine environment, ensuring all appropriate response tactics are considered for removal of pollutants.  Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie, in conjunction with the Northern Michigan Area Committee, has an ongoing effort to explore the feasibility of using In Situ (on-site) Burning as a pollution response tactic in the Straits of Mackinac and other Michigan waters.
