Presenter: Bea Freidlander
Similar to the personal caring for domestic animals in today's society, animals figured prominently in the lives of people during the American Civil War. The more famously known animals during this war were the 8th Wisconsin's eagle mascot, Old Abe, as well as Traveller, General Robert E. Lee's horse.
Bee Friedlander's talk will include anecdotes about famous and lesser known individual animals, and the countless unnamed animals who served, suffered and died during the war. She will also explore the role of animals in the lives of slaves, and consider whether it was a mere coincidence that the organized animal welfare movement in the United States began just months after the Civil War ended.
